    The authors of this randomized study evaluated the effects and costs of behavioral weight-loss treatment in 612 obese **s in rural communities. Significantly larger reductions in body weight were seen in the groups who received moderate and high degrees of therapy compared with the group who received a low degree and compared with the control group （who received nutrition education without behavioral instructions）。 No significant difference was seen between the group who received a moderate and the group who received a high degree of behavior therapy. The cost-effectiveness **yses favored moderate intervention over the other treatments.
